Post How cautious should you be about new software?

Maybe this is a little paranoid but it seems to me that for anybody wanting to hack poker accounts hiding a key logger or trojan inside an AHK script or other piece of freeware would be quite an effective way to do this.

How likely is this in actuality and are there any safeguards against this or things we should be looking out for before downloading new software?

With AHK scrips, everything is open source and visible. I don't believe that AHK has the complexity to log text and send it to another computer. They are also just plain text files so you don't have to worry about a trojan being hidden along with the actual script.

For random poker freeware I am definitely very very careful about what I install. I only install products from well known software developers with solid reputations.

You should also avoid any kind of pirated software. I would guess that the vast majority of pirated poker software (such as PokerTracker or Holdem Manger) contains malicious code.

Would you consider TableNinja to be a well known developer with a solid reputation? The reason I ask is because to a noob like myself it appears that for TN to work it needs complete access to everything short of my SS#. I have to disable UAC, run as administrator, and unblock it from my anti-virus program.

I have only heard good things about TN, but as my bankroll grows and the buy ins get bigger, I get more paranoid. I mean, if it can detect the size of the pot and if I'm sitting out, I'm guessing it can read my hole cards and cashier information.

I really like TableNinja and I have no reason to believe it isn't safe, I just think it's important to take every precaution possible when it comes to playing online poker for real money. Thanks for any advice and information.

Personally, I would have no problems running the TableNinja program on my PC. Ultimately the decision is up to you though.
