Interview with Poker Wingman developers
PokerSoftware.com: Talk about the development of Poker Wingman. What went into it?
Poker Wingman: We created Poker Wingman in 2004 after seeing that there was a real need for a fun and user-friendly odds calculator. There were lots of good technical tools on the market, but most involved charts and graphs that were hard to follow in a fast-moving online hand. We wanted to build a tool that could help both beginners and experienced players make decisions in a split-second glance at the screen.
PokerSoftware.com: Who is Poker Wingman best suited for and why?
Poker Wingman: Poker Wingman is best suited for beginners learning how to play poker or experienced home game players who are trying their hand at online poker. The game moves quickly online and that can be intimidating at first.
PokerSoftware.com: Talk about the decision of which features to implement, like the bankroll calculator and position strength indicator. Why are those important?
Poker Wingman: The Table Position Indicator looks like a radar screen you’d find on a fighter jet and it lays out the table at a glance so you can see your strength relative to the other players and blinds. This information is critical when you’re deciding if and how much to bet.
We decided to build the Bankroll Calculator because it’s a common rookie mistake to get into a ring game where you’re short-stacked relative to the table stakes. This tool tells you the bankroll you need for the table stakes you’re looking to play. We want you to have every advantage you can get.
PokerSoftware.com: What feedback have you received from users?
Poker Wingman: Our users love the simplicity of the tool - that you don’t need a manual to figure it out. We also get a lot of feedback about the whole “Wingman theme,” as people love the cockpit-style interface.
PokerSoftware.com: What features are in the works?
Poker Wingman: We are constantly updating Poker Wingman to work with new poker rooms and we test the software every time a poker room updates their client. As for new features, we’re working on adding multi-table support so people can play four tables at once using Poker Wingman.
PokerSoftware.com: What separates Poker Wingman from other Odds Calculators like it in the industry?
Poker Wingman: Our software is easy to use and gives straight-up advice without burying the user in stats, charts, and graphs. Users just want to know if they should bet, call, or fold.
PokerSoftware.com: Talk about the team behind Poker Wingman. Who is involved?
Poker Wingman: Five of us started the company. We’ve all known each other for years, so it’s fun to work with friends. Some had experience in the gaming industry and some had experience in developing software, so Poker Wingman was the perfect combination of our skill sets.

Full Review
Poker Wingman is an easy-to-use poker odds calculator that can help players learn the basic odds that are necessary to become a successful poker player. It provides the odds of making various hands and recommends actions. In addition, Poker Wingman includes other useful features such as a position strength indicator, a hand history sharing feature, poker slang terms, and an alert bar for dangerous situations.
For new players or those who are still working on memorizing odds of frequently occurring situations while playing Texas Hold'em, Poker Wingman is an excellent tool. Advanced players will get little value from the displayed odds and recommendations, as they will have become second nature already. There is a free version of Poker Wingman that works on play money and real money tables. If you are using play money and want to learn the odds before moving up, the free version is an excellent resource that can help improve your game at no cost to you. There is also a Pro version of the program that sells for $39.99 and has features that the free version does not. Let’s take a closer look at how the program works.
Once loaded, Poker Wingman will automatically display the community cards as well as your hole cards, which means you do not have to enter any data. The program will then display what your recommended action is in the “Wingman Says” bar. Right above where the community cards are located, you will see an alert bar. This will tell you which types of drawing hands you should watch out for.
You will also see the top five hands that your current hand can improve to, as well as the percent chance of making a better hand. You have the option of sending hands to your friends so they can see how you played. If you are new to the game, there is a glossary included so you can become more educated and learn the poker lingo. Here is what the software looks like:

The Pro version of Poker Wingman includes some features that are intended to help serious players improve their game. The Table Position Radar will show you where you are located at the table in relation to the blinds and betting order. This will allow you to see your table position and statistics about a hand all in one place.
You also have a Bankroll Calculator in the Pro version that automatically tells you what your bankroll should be for the stakes you are playing and the program warns you if you are short-stacked. This is a helpful reminder to help you practice good bankroll management.
You also have the option of using the Stealth Mode with the Pro version that allows you to shrink the program down to display only the most important information. One last feature that isn’t included in the free version is the Style of Play console. This will help you to adjust your play based on passed action at the tables. With this feature, you will be able to change gears at the right times in an effort to keep other players guessing.
Overall, Poker Wingman is a very slick odds calculator with several extra features that are nice to have. Although the program won’t make you winning player by itself, it is definitely a tool that should be used so that you have a very solid mathematical foundation for the game of poker.
