Detach Your Chat Box with AutoHotKey

Almost every AutoHotKey (AHK) script that we have featured so far has been geared toward the serious multi-table online poker player who needs just a little extra edge. However, there is another very large group of poker players out there who do not multi-table and instead simply play recreationally. They are only playing one table at a time and have plenty of time to chat at the table, which adds to their enjoyment. Chatting on PokerStars, for example, can be difficult because the default size of the poker table only allows five lines of text to be displayed in the chat box at once. If you get distracted, you constantly have to scroll back through to see what messages you missed from other players at the table.

Another scenario that makes keeping up with the chat box difficult is if you are railing a big final table where there are several people chatting at the same time. In this case, scrolling back through to see all of the messages becomes extremely difficult to keep up with. How nice would it be to simply detach the chat box from the table and enlarge it so that you never miss a line of text again? Thanks to AHK, we have a script that will make this wish a reality.

DetachChat is a free, open-source program that runs on PokerStars and allows you to assign a hotkey that automatically detaches the chat box and aligns it with the right side of the table. You can then resize the chat box by simply dragging the edges of the windows. You can also drag the chat box around to any location just as you would any other window you want to move. There is virtually zero customization needed to use this very simple script. Simply download the script and run it.

Here is how you get started using DetachChat:

1. Go to http://www.overcards.com/wiki/moin.cgi/DetachChat
2. Download the .zip files called “detachchat.zip”
3. Unzip the folder to your preferred location
4. Double click the “DetachChat” icon to run the program

Once the program is running, all you have to do to detach the chat box is point your mouse to the table you want to detach the chat from and press “F1.” You can reattach the chat box back to the table the exact same way. By default, the chat box isn’t very wide. You can drag the chat box's edges so that it is larger each time you load the script or you can edit the script’s default size so that it loads larger each time you use the script. To do so, right click the “DetachChat.ahk” icon and choose “Edit Script”. Scroll down until you see “PREFERRED_WIDTH:=200.” Change the default size to a larger number and then save and rerun the script. This size edit is completely optional and is not required to start using the script out of the box. DetachChat is ready to go as soon as you download it.

DetachChat is user-friendly and can make your poker sessions a little more enjoyable. Although it may not be used very much by multi-tablers, it can be a nice tool for single-table players and railers who want to get more engaged in the action. It's free and super simple, so give DetachChat a try!

As always, if you have questions, problems, or any other concerns, please make a post in the AHK Forum and we will be there to help.
