If you have an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, you are probably always on the lookout for awesome free applications.  There are plenty of decent apps that you might shell out a buck or two for, but to find something for free that’s worthwhile is like finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.  There are a ton of free poker apps out there that aren’t worth the download, but there is a new one that is worth a look.

The name of the app is called Poker Odds and can be found by going into the App Store from iTunes or your device and doing a search for “Poker Odds,” which will bring up the app in the search list, usually in the first three.  This application allows you to calculate the odds of winning poker hands right at the tips of your fingers.  It works for Texas Hold’em and Omaha from any iPhone and iPod Touch:

The program loads on an iPhone 4 in less than five seconds and you are taken to a very basic starting screen.  At the top, you see the application name of Poker Odds and to the left you’ll find a button to reset the table.  To the right of the screen is a button to “Add Hand,” which puts another player into the calculation.  You can have a minimum of two players and a maximum of seven for a Texas Hold’em hand calculation.  Most Omaha applications just allow two hands, but this one works just like the Hold’em area and allows between two and seven players.

To select cards, pick them on the screen (whether they are on the board or in one of the players’ hands) and you will see the selection wheel.  Pick the card value (deuce through ace) and then pick one of the four suits.  If you accidentally pick a card that is already in use in the hand, you will get a pop-up saying so.

You don’t have to press any “calculate” button, as the program will automatically start the calculations for you.  Simply put in the cards for the players in the hand and the program will automatically calculate the odds.  For those of you who like to study or get into arguments with friends, this is a very hand tool, especially considering that it comes with the Omaha feature.  In that game, calculating the odds in your head can be extremely difficult.

There’s nothing else to the program and that’s just fine because it’s an absolutely free application that lets you calculate odds for both Hold’em and Omaha.  Most (if not all other programs we have seen) in the App Store are fine Hold’em calculators, but we have yet to see one that allows you to not only calculate Omaha hands, but also more than two Omaha players at a time.

For those of you with an Apple device like an iPhone, iPod Touch, or iPad, the Poker Odds free calculator comes highly recommended.
