PokerSnowie Re-Tools Bet Strength Analysis

There are a few big changes going on at PokerSnowie.  Previously, the poker training software categorized hands as weak or strong, with weak hands being typically classified as bluffs.  PokerSnowie now categorizes the showdown strength of hands as weak, medium, or strong.

A showdown strength between 0 and 0.6 means PokerSnowie categorizes this hand as a weak one with little chance to win at showdown.  These types of hands should either be bluffs or folded, with no other action being recommended.

Hands with a strength of 0.6 to 1.0 are categorized as medium.  The software recommends to never bet with these hands; however, consider calling as a bluff catch when pot odds are favorable.  PokerSnowie also points out to do this more often against villains who bet too often or bet with an unbalanced range.  The reason PokerSnowie believes you should never bet with these hands is that this would essentially turn a strong showdown calling hand into a bluff.

Hands with a hand strength of 1.0 to 2.0 are categorized as strong.  This doesn't always mean betting is the best option since allowing someone else to bet may add more chips to your stack in the long-run.

Now that you understand how the showdown hand strength indicator works, we can get into a hand presented at the PokerSnowie blog that clearly presents an example of how and why the terminology changed.

The example presented shows the hero defending from the small blind with A-Q offsuit and subsequently betting after flopping top pair in a four-way pot on a Q-J-9 rainbow flop.  PokerSnowie evaluates this hand as medium strength, with a 0.93 showdown strength.

Previously, PokerSnowie classified betting with a hand with a 0.93 showdown strength as a bluff.  This is an incorrect way to classify this particular betting error since most likely the bet was made perceiving value instead of bluffing.  PokerSnowie still doesn't recommend you bet with this hand; however, it's for different reasons than it was providing previously.

Even though the evaluations within the software remain the same with the new ranking system, it is important to know why the evaluation is what it is and be able to filter for potentially calls versus bluff hands where you either give up or bet.

If you haven't seen how PokerSnowie can improve your game, you should consider doing so.  The software offers a ten-day risk-free trial.  If you like what you see, the software costs only €14.90 per month or €149.00 per year.
