We sat down with New Jersey's Daniel "RedsoxNets5" Sewnig (pictured) to get his views on poker software.  Sewnig plays on the regulated online poker sites in New Jersey and, in just a bit over a year, has accumulated over $100,000 in tournament cashes tracked by PocketFives.

PokerSoftware:  What poker software do you use while playing and for analysis?

Sewnig:  I am currently using Hold'em Manager 2 for both purposes.

PokerSoftware:  For how long have you been using Hold'em Manager 2 and why did you start using it?

Daniel Sewnig:  I can't remember the exact date I purchased Hold'em Manager, but it was definitely before Black Friday. A friend I had met through poker at college was putting in a session and I went to his room to see his setup and saw the HUD on his screen and asked him what it was. I couldn't believe how useful that could be and that I hadn't heard of it before. I knew I had to have it to keep up with the competition.

PokerSoftware:  How complex is your HUD setup?  Can you give us a peek under the hood?

Daniel Sewnig:  I have recently been working at adjusting it to cater to what I want to see at the table. I have been playing a lot more cash online lately so I have two different setups, one for tournaments and one for cash.

I actually adjusted my tournament HUD a couple days ago. It is pretty basic. The top line gives the standard name and number of hands versus an opponent. The second line is the standard VPIP / PFR / 3-bet %/ Fold to 3-bet %. The third line is now Flop c-bet % / Flop fold to c-bet % / Turn fold to c-bet % / River fold to c-bet %. People tend to be a bit more passive in New Jersey tournaments, so I found myself often checking their more detailed stats to determine if I should double and triple barrel, so I simply added those recently.

The cash game stats I now have up are exactly the same except I have added a fourth line for 4-bet % and Fold to 4-bet % since those stats are more relevant in the deeper-stacked cash games. The plan is to eventually have a lot more stats for cash, possibly even a line for each position.

PokerSoftware:  How are you using Hold'em Manager 2 as a study tool?

Daniel Sewnig:  Hold'em Manager can certainly be used as a great study tool.  I have only recently decided to be a bit more serious with the game of poker.  I am essentially starting up a "test trial" as a pro while finishing my last college class. Studying is something I really want to add to my daily routine, but haven't done much of lately. However, I know how I will be studying.

Hold'em Manager allows you to look at all of the hands you have played in the past and gives you stats on your opponents. I guess in a way I have been informally studying, looking at the biggest pots I played after a session, and seeing if I made any mistakes.

The software allows you to sort your hands based on a number of factors, one being pot size. It also shows you your all-in EV and I'll check that to see if I have been getting my money in good after a session. Of course, if you get KK in versus AA, the EV line will be bad despite you not making a mistake, so you need to take it with a grain of salt.

When I do eventually add studying to my daily routine, I hope to take some of the hands of the previous day that I had questions about and ask some of my friends who are good at the game to take a look and tell me what they think. I can always post those hands online as well to get some more outside perspective.

PokerSoftware:  We understand you enjoy broadcasting via Twitch.  How difficult is it to set up, what software are you using, and how can people watch you stream?

Daniel Sewnig:  Twitch is a really cool product, so I gave streaming a shot. I still need to figure out a bunch of different quirks to make my setup better, but for the most part it is not too difficult and it is free, so there's no reason not to do it.

I am using Open Broadcaster Software at the moment and am completely new to it, so I certainly need to ask others or do some research to get better at it. I also need a better setup; I only have a laptop right now and there simply is not enough space on my screen to pull stuff off and put it back on. There also isn't enough memory on my computer and it starts lagging, so I won't be doing a ton of streaming until I get a better setup with a desktop and additional monitor.

When I do stream, it is often of the tournaments I'm playing in New Jersey at night. Of the few streams I have done, I had one where I streamed from the start of the Borgata $10K until I won it, while simultaneously final tabling the WSOP $10K, so that was a lot of fun. I also gave away a free 4% of equity to viewers during one stream for a live tournament I played, which I proceeded to cash for around $3,700, so free giveaways are cool too! My page is twitch.tv/redsoxnets5, so feel free to check it out whenever I am live!
