Free Poker Database freepokerdb.com Takes Off

An open source program that tracks your results when you play online, freepokerdb is currently in alpha testing. The program currently supports Hold’em, Omaha, Stud, and Razz for cash games, sit and go tournaments, and multi-table tournaments. Given that the program is only in alpha testing, additional features and other capabilities will be on their way in the future and not everything is fully-functional right now. In the meantime, let’s take a look at how the freepokerdb can help improve your game as we provide an overview of it for PokerSoftware.com

Right now, cash games and tournaments on PokerStars are fully supported, as are cash games on Full Tilt Poker. Its programming team has also started plodding along with making the freepokerdb compatible with sites run by Everleaf Gaming, which include Poker4Ever, Pokerari, Cellsino, Red Jack Poker, and Red Cube Poker. Supported games include Hold’em, Omaha, Omaha High-Low, Stud, Stud High-Low, and Razz. Capabilities for Five Card Draw and Badugi, which are offered by many online poker rooms, are still being developed. A full-blown database for Badugi will be a welcome sign for fans of the little-known card game.

In terms of stakes, No Limit, Pot Limit, Fixed Limit, Capped No Limit, and Capped Pot Limit are all available. Database-wise, users have a choice of MySQL/InnoDB or PostgreSQL. It sets itself apart from programs like PokerTracker and Hold’em Manager, neither of which is free, by offering tracking capabilities for multiple varieties of poker. Moreover, freepokerdb will run on Linux, Windows, and Max OSX, whereas its two database counterparts are both Windows-based programs. In order to run Windows programs, Mac users generally have to use software like Parallels or Boot Camp.

Stats are displayed in a Table Viewer, which is given below, although the text is quite difficult to read when the image is shrunk. The Table Viewer looks just like your basic Excel spreadsheet, with a wealth of stats given across the top including the number of hands logged on a particular opponent like VPIP, PFR, Pre-Flop Three Bet and Four Bet, Aggression Flop, Fold Flop, Aggression Turn, Fold Turn, Aggression River, and Fold River. Other stats given as part of the freepokerdb include Post-Flop Aggression, Post-Flop Fold, and a bevy of showdown-related figures.

Here is a screen shot of the overall Table Viewer. For a full-size image, click here:

A Heads-Up Display is also available, which enables stats to be shown right next to a player’s name when playing at a table. This is displayed rather crudely in comparison to some of the fancier and more pleasant-looking HUDs like PokerACE. However, for a free program, it’s well worth it. Here is a look at the HUD in action at a table on PokerStars:

Glancing through the SourceForge forums, users of the software have encountered a few issues, but again the software is still in the alpha testing phase. Common speed bumps include difficulty loading data into the HUD, problems relating to installation, and the software freezing while importing hands.

If the project is ultimately successful, it will be a big sigh of relief to Mac software users as well as aficionados of Razz. It would become one of the only database programs available for non-Hold’em games and is one of the most extensive independent projects attempted in the industry in recent memory. Additional features that have been requested by its users include a Fish Finder, a Mac HUD, changes to the SQL interface, and tournament support for Full Tilt Poker.

We reached out to the program’s developers in order to get their thoughts. We’ll have an update if we receive one.
