Poker Software Revealed with Daryl Jace

As you likely already know, the poker training site Tournament Poker Edge has some of the best poker tournament players in the world teaching poker through videos. The stable of instructors is a mix of old school players that still get it done and newer players that are emerging on the scene.
 
One old school player, Daryl Jace, shared with us his thoughts on many topics including poker software. According to the Tournament Poker Edge website, Jace is the proud owner of $3 million in poker winnings. He amazingly appeared on the final table in the PokerStars Sunday Million five separate times, including two victories, under the screenname “aaaaaaaa”.  Additionally he has made it deep two separate times on poker’s biggest stage, the World Series of Poker Main Event.

PokerSoftware: When did you get into poker and when was the point you felt you "made it"?

Daryl Jace: I don’t know if I ever felt that way. I guess if there was any time it was my first trip to the World Series of Poker when I turned 21 years old. I don’t know, as I think my mindset just doesn't allow me to be really ever feel that way. I always want more, which doesn't exactly lead to happiness, lol.

PokerSoftware: What third-party poker software are you using and what are your general thoughts on its importance to your game?

Daryl Jace: PokerTracker 4 is incredible. It’s good for the HUD when you play, but it's also vital for studying your poker game.

When you learn how to use the filters you can use the software to isolate any spot in poker you want to work on, such as three-betting, ace-high flops, turn two-barrel spots, river spots facing a bet, etc.

PokerSoftware: What stats are most important to you in your HUD and why? What stats might be over-rated?

Raise first in is the most important to me as it's the one that gets the biggest sample the fastest.
Fold to 3bet, 4bet, are overrated. The spots vary so much and it's hard to get a big representative sample.

PokerSoftware: What is the biggest piece of advice you can give your students or someone aspiring to play at a high level?

Daryl Jace: Learn from others and help others. Study a lot on your own too.

PokerSoftware: What third-party poker software do you think is good for beginning players?

Daryl Jace: ICMIZER is the best for almost all player levels. On second thought, maybe all player levels.

PokerSoftware: How and when did you get involved with Tournament Poker Edge?

Daryl Jace: It was maybe five years ago. I was playing words with friends including Tournament Poker Edge Co-Founder Derek Tenbusch, and one day he messaged me asking if I wanted to make videos for his training site. I said yes, and the rest is history.

PokerSoftware: What is it like making videos for Tournament Poker Edge? What software do you use? How long does a video take to produce?

Daryl Jace: The guys from TPE are great. They are not only laid back and cool, but also super helpful. In my latest series, Tim “TTWIST” Kelly helped me a ton to improve my ability making videos.

I use Camtasia to make videos. The time it takes varies, however, a three hour series can take six to eight hours. The latest one I did went much quicker.

PokerSoftware: Who is your favorite TPE instructor outside of yourself?

Daryl Jace: Andrew “foucault82” Brokos, he's the GOAT (greatest of all time)!

PokerSoftware: Tell us a bit about your personal website JacePokerCoaching.com? What should people expect when visiting?

Daryl Jace: It's a pretty varied site. There is stuff on poker and poker coaching obviously, but I also have a tons of stuff on how to learn, practical life philosophy, and really cool pictures. I also do free "life" coaching (I haven't thought of a better term yet) where I basically just help people make decisions in a wide variety of areas and then take action on them.

PokerSoftware: Where can people contact you for coaching? What should they expect out of their first session?

We will find an area of the game they need to study as quickly as possible and then I will teach them how to study it. They will also deepen their understanding of that spot and therefore improve at it during the session. The huge improvement will come from effective study though.
